Democracy

Iceland claims to be the oldest democracy in the world.  In the year 930, at the end of the Settlement Period, a national legislature (Althingi) was established and a legal code adopted. Althingi is the first naitonal parliment in the world.  After a 45-year hiatus, the Althingi was re-estalished in 1845.

Government

Iceland is a parliamentary democratic republic.  A President is elected by direct popular vote, but executive power rests with the government by the Prime Minister.  The incumbent Head of State of Iceland is President Gudni T. Johannesson and Head of Government of Iceland is Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir.

Political Parties

The major political parties in Iceland include the Independence Party, the Left Green Movement, the Progressive Party, the Pirate Party, the Reform Party and Bright Future. After the general election in  October 2017,  a 3-party coalition government was formed by the Left Green Movement, the Independence Party and the Progressive Party.

Independence

On 1 December 1918, Iceland became a sovereign state in a royal union with Denmark.  On 17 June 1944, Iceland became a republic.  The National Day of Iceland is 17 June, the birth date of founding father Jon Sigurdsson.
