China has been the largest supplier and trading partner in Asia for Iceland for over 10 years. China has also become the biggest Asian market for Iceland since 2017. 

Iceland imports a wide variety of goods from China. Intermediate products such as building materials and traditional products such as textiles, furniture, and toys, household products have maintained high levels throughout the years. Imports of industrial and high-tech products, including electronics and machinery, have also grown rapidly.

In recent years, with the steady growth of Icelandic economy, especially after the implementation of the Iceland-China Free Trade Agreement since July 1, 2014, imports from China have been setting new records repeatedly.

In 2018, as a resul of the import of such high-value products as fishing vessels and aluminium oxide, imports from China reached  ISK 73.6 billion, an increase of 29.89% over 2017, making China the second biggest supplier for Iceland for the first time.

Imports from China set the 2nd historical height in 2019, in spite of a considerable decline from 2018 and slip to the fourth place among the importing countries.

More and more Icelandic companies have set their eyes on China, seeking various business opportunities brought by the Free Trade Agreement. With the deepening of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, imports from China are expected to grow further.
